Adopt a Friend

When we decided to start looking for the perfect dog for our family, we immediately started looking at rescues and shelters. Giving a home to a dog who needed one has been an amazing experience for us. While I’m not quite as active in animal rescue as some of my friends are, I’m a big advocate of looking there first.

If you are looking for a lifetime friend, please check out It lists many local animals in need of homes. It is also highly addictive and may lead to multiple pets, haha.

We adopted through the York County SPCA ( and found it to be a great experience. The staff was helpful when we were picking out a dog and they provide excellent facilities and help after the adoption.

Also, please consider adopting a black dog, like Bentley. Black dogs often have difficult times finding homes because of the stigma attached to them. I have a  strong preference for black dogs, like my parents’ lab, Rocky. Rocky had to be put to sleep because of an untreatable heart problem two years ago and I still miss him terribly. Thanks so much for considering adopting your next pet!

Hi! Thank you so much for including this on your blog. I too have always had a preference for black pets, including a black cat, Midnight, and two black dogs, Shadow and Jet, I had growing up.
I also have enjoyed reading your blog as I stumbled upon it while doing some research on Scottish terriers. My husband and I just adopted our very own 2 1/2 year old black Scottie girl, Abby, and we are so glad we chose adoption.
I look forward to reading about Bentley’s adventures as we have our own adventures with Abby!
    All the best,
